Duluth Transit Authority Launches Two New Electric Buses

The DTA announced that its new 40 ft. Battery Electric Buses have hit the road. Two Gillig Battery Electric Buses are now an active part of the DTA Fleet, joining about 70 diesel powered and 6 Proterra Catalyst E2s which entered service in 2018, when the DTA became the first transit agency in Minnesota to operate BEBs in fixed-route service.

These next-generation Gillig electric buses are certified for service on steep grades and reflect the progress made since the DTA first began its battery-electric journey. They are each equipped with custom graphics including a power plug design to distinguish them from the traditional fleet.

One of these new buses will be in the Clyde Ironworks lot Saturday, April 17, during the EcoFest event from 11 am to 3 pm. Visitors can take a look inside the bus, and familiarize themselves with the new vehicles.  DTA team members will also have a table at the event to discuss all things Eco-friendly and Transit related.

DTA CEO Chris Belden noted, “Public transit is a fantastic way to lower emissions and reduce congestion on our roadways. The two electric buses we have added are quiet, efficient, and capable. We are very excited to welcome everyone aboard the latest additions to our fleet.”

DTA officials noted that the two EV’s will serve the local routing on the DTA system and will rotate between several neighborhoods and corridors. The extended range of the new buses will mean they can perform for 16+ hours before requiring a charge.
