With just one week to go until the Going Bananas Run takes over downtown Duluth, excitement continues to build as registration approaches 700 participants for what has quickly become one of the city’s most unique and energetic community events.
Set for Saturday, May 30, the Going Bananas Run invites participants of all ages and abilities to throw on a banana suit, hit the streets of Duluth, and take part in a fun-first race experience centered around community, laughter, and giving back. The event begins and ends at Bent Paddle Brewing Co. and winds through the Lincoln Park neighborhood.
What started as a fun idea has quickly turned into something much bigger.
“We honestly did not know what to expect when we launched this,” said Andrew Weisz, organizer of the Going Bananas Run. “Seeing nearly 700 people sign up to run through Duluth dressed as bananas has been incredible. It has become less about the race itself and more about people coming together, having fun, and kicking off summer in a way that feels uniquely Duluth.”
Every participant receives a banana suit as part of registration, creating what organizers hope will become one of the largest gatherings of banana-suited runners in the Midwest. The event also features the return of the Gorilla, a costumed runner who starts after participants and attempts to chase them down before the finish line. Participants who beat the Gorilla will receive a special prize.
In addition to the fun, the event also supports a meaningful cause, with proceeds benefiting local nonprofit efforts connected to food insecurity and community support initiatives.
Organizers say registration numbers have exceeded expectations and encourage anyone interested in participating to register soon before spots fill up.
