ImOn Communications Begins Construction on Duluth’s 100% Fiber Network

ImOn Communications, a leading provider of high-speed Internet services across the Midwest, announced that construction has begun on the fiber-to-the-premise Internet network in Duluth. This infrastructure will connect an estimated 25,000 addresses in 2026 and an additional 26,000 addresses in 2027, representing a total investment of $100 million.

The ImOn network will include a combination of underground fiber cables and aerial fiber cables, using existing utility poles. During construction, ImOn crews will be working within utility easements and public rights-of-way. Residents will be notified by mail and door hangers before construction begins on their street.

The network will be built in sections, with each section taking approximately six to eight weeks to complete, weather permitting. Construction is currently underway in the first section of Duluth, located just west of the University of Minnesota Duluth. Installations for the first customers are expected to begin in mid-to-late July, with additional sections coming online as construction progresses throughout the remainder of the year.

Once the network is complete, Duluth residents will have access to symmetrical fiber Internet speeds up to 5 Gig, and Duluth businesses will have access to symmetrical speeds up to 10 Gig. The network will also provide fiber-based phone service, known as VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol).

“We are excited to begin construction of our Duluth fiber Internet network,” said ImOn President and CEO Patrice Carroll. “Strong communities depend on strong connections. Reliable Internet is essential for how the people of Duluth work, learn, run businesses, and stay connected to loved ones. This fiber network will provide the necessary speed, capacity, and reliability to fuel those connections for thousands of homes and businesses, today and in the future. We look forward to serving the Duluth community for decades to come.”

Network construction will pause when the ground freezes in the winter and resume in spring 2027, as soon as weather conditions allow. The entire network is expected to be complete by fall 2027. As the community continues to grow, additional expansion projects will be completed as needed to connect new developments and extend service to new areas.

Fiber network construction in Superior, Wisconsin, is expected to begin in the coming weeks, pending permit approvals, and will occur simultaneously with the construction in Duluth.

Construction information and progress updates for both communities can be found on ImOn’s website and ImOn’s Facebook page

ImOn currently serves seven metro areas across the Midwest: Cedar Rapids metro, Iowa City metro, Dubuque metro, the Sioux City metro (Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota), Clinton metro, Marshalltown, and many rural communities across Southeast Iowa. The Twin Ports region marks ImOn’s eighth metro area with fiber Internet service and the company’s first service area in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
