We Are the Chamber: Sarah Herrick-Smisek, 23rd Veteran

“I’ve always been someone who enjoys bringing people together,” said Sarah Herrick-Smisek, the Communications and Synergy Manager for 23rd Veteran, the nonprofit organization that provides those who have served with mental-wellness assistance. “I grew up in Duluth, and throughout my career – whether running a small business, working alongside nonprofits or stepping into operational leadership – I’ve been drawn to work that’s rooted in people, purpose and community.”

“23rd Veteran provides functional mental-wellness programming,” said Herrick-Smisek.” [We] support mental health through action, accountability and connection, rather than focusing solely on clinical approaches. Our core offering is 23V Recon, a 14-week cohort-based program designed to help participants rebuild connection, confidence and purpose.”

“One of my greatest points of pride is deeply personal,” Herrick-Smisek said. “In 2025, I participated in Recon XIX as a civilian participant, which gave me a completely new perspective on the work we do. Going through the program pushed me well outside my comfort zone and challenged me in ways I hadn’t expected. It led to meaningful personal growth, lasting friendships and a much deeper understanding of just how life-changing this experience can be.”

The future of 23rd Veteran is bright, Herrick-Smisek said. “Looking ahead, our focus is on growing in a way that’s thoughtful and sustainable, while keeping people at the center of everything we do,” she explained. “A key part of that growth is continuing to build strong community and corporate partnerships, which allow us to expand our reach, deepen our programming and create shared impact with organizations that believe in this work.”

“This work is about people, plain and simple,” Herrick-Smisek said. “It’s about showing up, listening and creating spaces where folks feel supported and not alone.”
