The Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center is proud to announce the opening of a new exhibit honoring the life of Al Amatuzio. The exhibit opened to the public on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, what would have been Al’s 102nd birthday.
The exhibit offers visitors a look at how military service can inspire a lifetime of innovation and leadership. Amatuzio’s story begins with his service in the Naval Air Corps and Merchant Marine during World War II. After the war, he joined the Minnesota Air National Guard. His experiences with the Guard, in aviation and mechanics, laid the groundwork for what would become a revolutionary career in the oil industry. The exhibit traces this journey, connecting his time in uniform to his later success.
“My dad was a true patriot,” said Amatuzio’s son, Alan Amatuzio. “As the son of Italian immigrants, a strong sense of gratitude was instilled in him for the opportunities provided simply by being American. He loved his country and his life truly embodies the American dream.”

Through photographs, artifacts and video displays, visitors will gain insight into Amatuzio’s dedication to excellence.
“This exhibit tells a powerful story about how service shapes people long after they return home,” said Briana Fiandt, Curator at the Richard Bong Veterans Historical Center.
The exhibit reflects the Center’s ongoing mission to preserve and share the stories of those men and women from the Twin Ports who have served in the military.
The public is invited to attend the opening and explore this inspiring addition to the museum. For more information, including hours and admission, please visit www.BongCenter.org.
