Lake Superior Zoo Celebrates Malkia the Lioness in Her Golden Years

The Lake Superior Zoo is honoring one of its most cherished residents. Malkia, the zoo’s beloved African lioness, has been part of the Lake Superior Zoo family since she arrived as a tiny cub. Now 18 years old, she continues to enjoy her golden years surrounded by expert care, comfort and the love of the community that
has watched her grow.

Lions typically live into their mid-teens, and Malkia has surpassed that expectation thanks to attentive husbandry, individualized enrichment and the dedication of her animal care team. Her longevity is also a testament to the support of the community that has embraced her throughout her life.

Many guests will remember Malkia’s siblings, Lily and Leo, who died from cancer in 2022. As the last of the trio, Malkia has transitioned into a quieter chapter of life. She moves more slowly, naps a bit longer and savors every bit of sun that shines on her habitat.

As a geriatric lion, Malkia receives specialized daily care tailored to her changing needs. She is given daily joint supplements and pain medication to help manage arthritis and keep her comfortable. Her habitat and behind-the-scenes spaces have been thoughtfully modified to reduce the need to jump or climb, easing the strain on her aging joints.

To ensure her health remains stable, Malkia is weighed more frequently and receives more frequent veterinary checkups. These proactive measures allow the zoo’s veterinary and keeper teams to monitor her condition and adjust her care as needed.

Malkia always has full access to her indoor habitat, allowing her to choose whether she
wants to interact with the public or rest inside. This flexibility is especially important for
an elderly lion who may prefer to rest throughout the day, warm and in the quiet.

Her indoor space is heated for her comfort, and her outdoor habitat includes two heated
rocks — favorite spots where she often lounges to soothe her joints. Guests should
know that if they don’t see her in her habitat right away, she is simply enjoying her
indoor space, not in distress.

Since the passing of her siblings, Malkia has been living on her own, a decision made
with her well-being at the forefront. Introducing an elderly lion to a new pride or
companion can be dangerous and stressful, especially for a senior cat with arthritis and
limited mobility. Keeping her solo ensures she remains safe and calm, and she can
enjoy her days without the physical or social pressures of integrating into a new group.

“Malkia’s health and comfort guide every decision we make,” said the Lake Superior
Zoo’s animal care team. “She’s an extraordinary lioness, and we’re committed to
ensuring her remaining years are peaceful and full of care.”

While Malkia is content and doing well for her age, the zoo acknowledges that time with
her is precious. Guests are encouraged to visit, say hello, and celebrate her remarkable
life. Photos, memories, and stories shared by visitors help honor not only Malkia’s
journey, but also the legacy she shares with Lily and Leo.

The Lake Superior Zoo extends heartfelt gratitude to the community for being part of
Malkia’s extended pride.
