The Marshall H. and Nellie Alworth Memorial Fund welcomes Sara Niemi to the Board of Directors. Niemi brings more than 20 years of experience in nonprofit leadership to the Fund.
“I’m honored to join the Alworth Scholarship board and support an organization that has made such a meaningful difference for students across northeastern Minnesota for generations.”
In addition to her work at Duluth Bethel, PAVSA and the United Way, Niemi currently serves on the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits Member Board of Directors.
“I’m passionate about creating opportunities for people to reach their full potential, and I believe investing in students is an investment in the future of our entire region.”
The Alworth Scholarship application is now open for high school seniors who are graduating from a high school (or approved home school curriculum) in a 10-county region of Northeaster Minnesota. The deadline to apply is Jan. 15, 2027. This year, students will be applying for the newly increased amount of $28,000 – up from the previous award of $24,000. Students can learn more about the scholarship and eligibility requirements at alworthscholarship.org.
Since 1949, the Alworth Memorial Fund has granted scholarships that support students going into a math, science, engineering, or medicine related field with high scholastic records and financial need in the Alworth Memorial Fund region. The Fund has awarded thousands of scholarships, amounting to more than $60 million after the recent 2025 scholarship award year.
