Essentia Health, Whole Foods Co-op Launch “Fresh Dollars” Program to Boost Access to Fresh Produce

Essentia Health and Whole Foods Co-op have launched a “Fresh Dollars” collaboration, a new initiative designed to make fresh fruits and vegetables more accessible and affordable for individuals and families participating in qualifying assistance programs.

The program matches up to $10 spent on fresh produce every Tuesday at either Whole Foods Co-op location (Hillside or Denfeld) with an equal amount in Fresh Dollars. These vouchers can be used on any future shopping trip (within 28 days) toward additional fresh fruits, vegetables, seeds or plants that grow edible foods at the co-op.

“Access to nutritious food is a cornerstone of health and well-being,” said Russell Habermann, manager for Essentia’s community health program. “Through our partnership with Whole Foods Co-op, Fresh Dollars empowers community members to choose fresh, healthy options more often. Essentia is proud to support this innovative program that directly addresses food-access needs in the Northland.”

“Whole Foods Co-op has a deep commitment to nourishing our community with local, high-quality, fresh food,” said Sarah Hannigan, general manager for Whole Foods Co-op. “We are grateful for Essentia’s partnership on the Fresh Dollars program, which makes it even easier for more of our neighbors to fill their carts with fresh produce.”

The program is open to anyone enrolled in one of the following qualifying programs (proof required at sign-up):

• Emergency Assistance Program (St. Louis County or the Salvation Army)

• Energy Assistance Program (AEOA)

• Medicaid

• Section 8 or HRA Housing Program

• SNAP/EBT

• Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI or RSDI)

• WIC (Women, Infants, Children)

Participants can sign up for free at the customer service counter at either Whole Foods store. Co-op owners previously enrolled in the Whole Foods Co-op Essentials Discount will be automatically enrolled in Fresh Dollars and can receive both benefits. Participation is validated annually, with one Fresh Dollars account per household.

The Fresh Dollars program is funded by Essentia Health in partnership with Whole Foods Co-op.
