Nearly 100 Scouts and adult leaders from across Minnesota’s Northland will gather May 15–17 for the annual Duluth-o-ree, a spring camporee hosted by Northern Star Scouting at Adventure Base near Island Lake, just north of Duluth.
The weekend campout will bring together Scouts from multiple troops for hands-on outdoor activities focused on leadership, teamwork, and service. A cornerstone of this year’s program is orienteering, with Scouts designing and leading their own navigation courses, putting problem-solving skills and youth leadership into action.
In addition to skills-based programming, participants will complete a service project
maintaining local cross-country ski trails around Adventure Base. This effort helps preserve
community access to outdoor recreation and reflects Scouting’s long-standing
commitment to service and outdoor sustainability.
Across the road at another Northern Star Scouting property, Cub Scouts and their families
will also take part in a parallel spring family campout. Families will arrive Friday evening to
set up camp and enjoy games and a cracker-barrel social in the lodge. Saturday activities
include a traditional flag ceremony, group breakfast, and outdoor team-building games
designed to build confidence and cooperation.
The highlight of the Cub Scout weekend will be the Rank Up Ceremony, where Scouts are
recognized for their achievements and presented with new rank badges and neckerchiefs.
The event will conclude with a brief “A Scout Is Reverent” reflection, encouraging Scouts to
reflect on their personal beliefs, respect others, and appreciate the natural world.
“Our Cub Scouts are excited to come together for a weekend of camping, play, and
hands-on outdoor skills. Events like this give families from across Duluth a chance to
connect, learn from one another, and build the kind of friendships that make Scouting such
a powerful part of growing up.” said Jon KenKnight, Cubmaster of Duluth Cub Scout Pack
43.
Families are welcome to participate for the full weekend, or attend select activities, making
the campout accessible and flexible for all.
Together, the Duluth-o-ree and Cub Scout family campout showcase the core values of
Scouting — youth leadership, outdoor adventure, and service—while strengthening
connections among Scouts, families, and the wider community.
Northern Star Scouting serves 39,000+ youth and their families each year through programs that
